Temple Emanu-El is thrilled to welcome Leonard Thaw as its new Director of Education!

Mr. Thaw was an outstanding candidate and brings many years of Jewish leadership experience to our Temple family.  Already hard at work, we are looking forward to the wonderful religious school curriculum he plans to bring to Temple Emanu-El.

Mr. Thaw is an out-of-the-box thinker and is working on a wonderful and diverse year for our religious school community. Along with student activities, he has plans for several family events, such as a congregational Shabbat dinner before each of the four class services and interesting speakers on various topical issues.  In addition to heading up our religious school, Mr. Thaw will also be conducting the Family Service on the High Holidays as well as some of next year's summer services.

Mr. Thaw received his Jewish Education Certification from the Morasha Teacher Preparation Institute from Touro College via the Suffolk Association of Jewish Educators (SAJES) and the New Directors' Institute of United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism. He has been a Jewish educator, a Youth Group Director and a Junior Congregation leader throughout Long Island since the age of sixteen and more recently, the education director at two Long Island synagogues. Fluent in trope, he chants Torah and Haftarah and tutors Bar and Bat Mitzvah students.

He received his formal Jewish education at Jewish Day Schools on Long Island and Yeshiva University High School and attended Queens College. He's also experienced Israel, most recently with 25 colleagues on a 10-day SAJES educator experience.

His warm and outgoing personality, coupled with his knowledge, experience and professionalism, contribute to his great rapport with students, faculty and parents. An easy person to talk to, Mr. Thaw has an open-door policy and he is always willing to listen to any suggestions and/or concerns Temple members may have and he encourages members to stop by and introduce themselves.

“I am thrilled to be joining the Temple Emanu-El community and am impressed with its strong commitment to Jewish education,” says Mr. Thaw. “I look forward to the continued support already shown to me as I work to further enhance the Jewish educational experience at Temple Emanu-El.”

Please join us in welcoming Leonard Thaw, his wife, Millie and daughter, Cassie, to the Temple Emanu-El family.
